The best way to fix it is to flat-out remove the point-of-no-return. That is, you will always be able to get back to Ascalon Pre-Searing even while doing the PvP/Rurik mission (and obviously stay post-Searing after the mission). Why is that point-of-no-return system in anyways?

Well, storyline-wise it would not make sense to be able to return to presearing, and it obviously interferes with the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title.

Eh, they should just allow people to go through the gate solo.

What should be done is:
1) Set a minimum of 10-15 seconds on the timer.
2) Add a cancel button to the timer, usable by both players.
3) Allow a return to Ascalon any time BEFORE the completion of the Ascalon Academy mission. This may cause problems with those going for Survivor, as they would need to stay through the PvP match, but this can be easily fixed by not counting deaths during the match.
I doubt this problem would pop up anymore.

The problem there is the PVP match and the LDoA title. If you allow people to go back to pre after the pvp battle, you may give a non-wanted way for people to reach level 20 (15+ people could let you kill them for free or a small fee)
Easiest way i think would be not allowing the academy mission to be started if you are in a group.

That is what I suggested.
Adding time to the countdown would be pointless, as it runs on a cyclic counter. For example, if the max time for the count is 30 seconds, then the gate opens every 30 seconds and resets, regardless of whether or not anyone enters. What the 'Perma Pre Assasin' is doing is tracking the cycle, and entering the mission when there are only a few seconds remaining.
The counter mechanism would have to be changed entirely, so that it starts from 30 seconds every time, but that would complicate the syncronisity of people entering the Academy for their PvP match.

Not realy. It would simply have to be reset from 0-30 to 15-45. Still sets the joining every 30 seconds as usual, with a 15 second minimum.
Although I can see a few problems with the idea of returning after the match, only entering by yourself is a terrible idea. I am sure many people, myself for one, enjoy entering with a friend.
Perhaps the best solution (if this is still a problem after extended timer/cancel) would be to require conformation from both players before the timer began.

*sigh*
This kinda reminds me of Diablo2 in it's current condition. Try to enter a public hardcore game there. You never survive it. Literally.
The griefing in D2 has become such routine, everyone takes it for granted. Hell, they don't even take their time to shout "owned!!!" anymore.

From personal experience, whenever I've initiated Tydus' mission I've had up to 60 seconds countdown. Most often it starts around 45 seconds.
Very unfortunate that this is happening though.

Always had time before entering so just shut your game off.

Bleh.
The Timer is on a global Heartbeat. Every 60 Seconds for example it arranges a match with those that signed up during those 60 Seconds. If you're lucky you've got 59 Seconds. If you've got bad luck you've got 2 seconds left.
If you know how the heartbeat of the mechanism ticks, you can wait for the timer to get close to just a few seconds and THEN party up.
It's not as easy as "just" shutting your game off because quite frankly, by then it might allready be too late.

Shit of a thing to happen.
The most annoying pratt i've come across in 26 months of playing was some wanker who thought it was funny to run in and out of Ascalon City...as soon as we zoned, he'd run back in, then back out, then back in...
He thought it was hilarious to annoy us 'noobs', being completely unaware some of us Pre veterans have been there for two years.

If there's no opposing party you log straight into Rurik's monologue without the countdown timer (vague recollection, could be wrong) and bypass the PvP. If that happens, you're pooched.

I think the big problem is that when you start the timer you are free to move where ever you want to so the invite can come from anywhere in ascalon. I have had up to a 54 second countdown when going post so I think that the perpurtrator is letting the count down get to less that 5 or 10 seconds the inviting as many as they can in the hope someone acceptd

I don't know about that. Isn't it impossible to leave or invite others once the timer has started?
I think a lot of you have missed the point. Yes it's possible to protect yourself and if you are aware of this trick it's fairly easy to avoid, but how many guild wars players actually visit the forums? I'm sure there are a lot of Perma-Pre players that are still unaware that scumbags are pulling this trick and if you group with someone without knowing they can do this, it can be difficult to react in time to stop it.
Arenanet really needs to close this exploit for that reason alone.
Edit: You know, this same thing happened to me last night. However in my case, no harm was done, just a slight inconvenience and no malicious intent.
I was in Kaineng Center selling some goods. I had a party search ad set up and was advertising various items in trade chat. One person PM'd me that they'd like to buy and we grouped up to finish the transaction. I sold my item to him and immediately, I see "traveling to Lion's Arch in :10...:09....:08....:07....."
I yelled STOP! several times, but it fell on deaf ears. Once I arrived in LA, I quickly booked passage back to Kaineng. My fleet-footed trading partner later apologized.
I would really be nice to have the option to leave the group once a travelling timer or Mission timer starts if you don't want to travel. This has happened to me a few times and I'm sure it's happened to you too.

Weird comment, you can only pay attention if you are aware that something like this can and will be done to you.
Who, in their right mind, would expect something like this?
And you are griefed because you try to help someone, that must be the worst of them all.

if your arranging for parties tell them you will meet them in Abby instead and start the over the wall stuff from there. its only an extra minute really. Don't party up in Ascalon if your at risk... Problem solved.
